The Symbolism of Jesus Riding a Colt on Palm Sunday

In the Gospels, we see that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt on what we now celebrate as Palm Sunday. This act was not a random choice but carried deep symbolism and significance.

Firstly, the choice of riding a colt fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 which says, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” This prophecy pointed to Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.

Secondly, by choosing to ride a humble colt instead of a majestic horse as kings and conquerors would usually do, Jesus demonstrated his humility and meekness. He came not as a conquering warrior but as the Prince of Peace. This act foreshadowed his sacrificial death on the cross for our sins.

Furthermore, the colt symbolizes peace. In ancient times, when a king rode into a city on a horse it was seen as an act of war; but riding on a colt symbolized peace. Jesus came to bring peace between God and humanity through his ultimate sacrifice.

Lastly, by riding into Jerusalem on a colt amidst the cheers and waving palm branches from the crowd, Jesus was fulfilling another prophecy from Psalm 118:25-26 which says, “Lord, save us! Lord give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” The people recognized him as their long-awaited King.

In conclusion, Jesus’ choice to ride into Jerusalem on a colt was intentional and full of symbolism. It represented his fulfillment of prophecy, his humility and meekness, his role as the Prince of Peace, and his recognition as the King sent by God. As we celebrate Palm Sunday each year, let us remember these profound truths and reflect on the significance of this momentous event in our Christian faith.
